Old Maniowy

New Maniowy

Diagram: log-built wall and gable under shingles Our own illustrative drawing, drawn twice: on the left in line on a dark background, on the right in colour on a light one; it is the same shape. The front of a building with eight horizontal logs with projecting ends, the gable and the right part of the wall under shingles, the left part left bare to show the log corner joint. Marker 1: log corner joint. Marker 2: shingles. This is not a depiction of the chapel of St Sebastian.
The same object, two addresses. A diagram, not a photograph of the chapel (we have no photograph with publication rights): 1 log corner joint, 2 shingles. The seam marks the relocation, not a route.

A wooden chapel: a larch log-built structure, walls covered with shingles — this is how the V2 material quotes the municipality’s description.

FabricNew Maniowy, after 1988

According to the V2 material · to be verified

According to V2, the municipality points to the same building in present-day Maniowy. How many of the original logs and shingles remain and how many were replaced, we do not know; the extent is to be confirmed.

On the Dunajec, on the valley floor. Photographs of the chapel from this period: we have none.

SurroundingsNew Maniowy, after 1988

According to the V2 material · to be verified

Changed: the southern slopes of the Gorce Mountains, a new village; according to V2, since 1993 the seat of the Czorsztyn municipal office. A present-day photograph of our own, legally usable: we have none.

The drawing does not change. What lies behind it does.

On the left the background is horizontal lines, on the right diagonal ones. This is texture only: valley and slope, not a map and not an elevation profile. With the question about surroundings the texture strengthens and the object fades — because then it is the setting that is the subject.

The content comes from municipal descriptions quoted in V1. In this run the sources were not opened; everything below is to be verified.

Document from before 1987None.

We have no photograph of the former chapel with publication rights, and we do not replace it with a reconstruction.

Needed: author, date, address of the shot, reference number, permission to publish.

Present-day documentNone.

There is no photograph of our own, legally usable, of the chapel in New Maniowy. A photograph of a similar building would not replace it.

Needed: as above, plus the same framing as the old shot, if one turns up.

Dates around the chapel

From municipal materials given in V1, to be re-checked. The film and photographs are not shown here: we have no reproduction rights.

What the relocation did not preserve

Not preserved — by the nature of relocation

  • The former place: the valley floor on the Dunajec and the surroundings of the old village.

We do not know whether it preserved these

  • All of the original fabric — which logs and shingles are original.
  • The layout of the chapel in relation to the cemetery and the old roads.
  • Anything that belongs to the memories of particular families: we do not add other people’s words, and a photograph of a similar building does not close the story of any home.
