The town did not change in a single day

Jastrzębie-Zdrój before the mines

The pump room, Łazienki III and the park each have their own biography. Move the cross-section line: a single year shows them side by side, together with a count of the mine openings listed. Hatching means no data, not zero.

Cross-section of the year

1971

Year 1971: spa function according to the material in 3 of 3 sites. Mine openings listed: 4 of 4. The material describes both spa function and mine openings at the same time. No start date in the material: park.

Four horizontal timelines, 1900–2024: the pump room, Łazienki III, the Spa Park and mine openings. A vertical line for the selected year crosses all of them. Cobalt segments show spa function according to the material, light segments a later function, grey hatching no description or an unknown state, and black lines the transition years of the pump room and Łazienki III. Rust-coloured lines mark mine openings in 1962, 1965, 1969 and 1971. The state of the selected year is described by the result cards below the axis.

Our own diagram based on the V1/V2 material, not a map and not a photograph; it does not show what the buildings looked like. The axis covers 1900–2024 and the width of one year is constant. The vertical line is the selected year; you can drag it, move it with the slider or arrow keys, or set it with the buttons. Text equivalent: the cards below and the list in the Biographies section.

Without JavaScript the line does not move: the state for 1971 is shown, and the full biographies and sources are below.

How to read the axis

  • Spa or therapeutic function described in the material
  • Later function from V2, boundary dates to be checked
  • Later function known, moment of change unknown
  • No description or unknown state (e.g. the war years at the pump room, the park after 1994). This is not zero
  • Faded left edge: start undated or before 1900
  • Dotted edge: approximate boundary (c.)
  • Black line: the year a site changes, day unknown
  • Diamond: event dated to a year (1993 register, 2023 gallery)
  • Rust-coloured line: a mine opening listed in the material (context, not a cause)

Three biographies, three different dates

Each place has its own turning points. After you choose a year in the cross-section, the matching entries are highlighted. Everything below comes from the V1/V2 material and has not been re-verified.

Pump room

Spa Park

  1. Until 1938, start undatedA brine pump room with an orchestra (V2 gives only “19th century”).
  2. War years (1939–1947 in the model)Rebuilding and wartime destruction, without dates. The material does not confirm that the pump room worked in individual years; the interval is an assumption of the model.
  3. July 1948The renovated pavilion is put into use.
  4. From July 1948 to 1994A pavilion in the spa.
  5. 1994End of the spa's activity in the material. Day unknown; it is not known whether this is a formal or a de facto end.
  6. After 1994, dates unknownAccording to V2: taken over by the municipality, with a summer café in the former pavilion.
  7. 2011Decision to demolish it and build a new pavilion echoing a garden gazebo. Completion date unknown.

A question to ask when looking: how does the form of the modern pavilion echo the historic spa gazebos?

Łazienki III

Spa complex

  1. Before c. 1920No mention in the material. This does not mean that nothing was there.
  2. C. 1920 – c. 1945Construction of the building; hydrotherapy and electrotherapy treatments. Boundaries approximate.
  3. C. 1945–1948After wartime destruction. The material does not describe its function in these years.
  4. 1949Restoration; the start of the Natural Therapy Institute.
  5. 1949–1994Natural Therapy Institute, 45 years according to the material.
  6. 1993Entry in the register of monuments. This is the status of the building, not a description of its function.
  7. 1994End of the Institute's function; day unknown.
  8. After 1994, dates unknownThorough rebuilding; Contemporary Art Gallery and a nature observatory (according to V2).

A question to ask when looking: how was the former therapeutic architecture adapted into art galleries?

Spa Park

And its memory: Spółka Bracka

  1. No start dateThe park brings together the pump room and the treatment establishments (according to V2).
  2. 1862, date of an objectA marble therapeutic bath from the City History Gallery exhibition. This is the date of the bath, not the start of the park.
  3. 1994The year the spa's activity ends in the material. The park has no date of change of its own here.
  4. After 1994, no date of its ownAccording to V2, a recreational space for residents; this sentence has no separate source in the material.
  5. From 2023The City History Gallery in the former Spółka Bracka, ul. 1 Maja 61: a separate building, not part of the park. A spa exhibition.

A question to ask when looking: how does the presence of a physical exhibit complement a walk through the Spa Park?

What this axis does not say

Mines and buildings sit on one axis, but the axis arranges dates; it does not explain causes.

Limits of interpretation

  • Coincidence is not a cause. The material does not say why the spa ended in 1994. We do not derive a cause from the order of the mine opening dates.
  • A year is not a day. The first opening is 4 December 1962, and the day of the end in 1994 is not given. The difference between the years is 32, but from 4 December 1962 to an unknown day in 1994 the span ranges from c. 31 years and 4 weeks to c. 32 years and 4 weeks.
  • Formal versus de facto end. The material does not say whether 1994 is a decision, the closing of the treatments, or both. The pump room and Łazienki III have the same end year, but we do not know whether it is a single event. The park has no date of change of its own.
  • Unknown is not zero. Hatching means no description. The mine counter counts the openings listed, not working mines, and the list has only four entries.
  • A diagram, not a document. The axis does not depict what the buildings looked like. There are no photographs from before 1994 here, and no reconstructions.

Four simplifications and what the material says

“A mine in 1962 closed the spa straight away.”
First opening 4 December 1962, end of the spa's activity in 1994. On the axis, the years 1962–1993 show three sites in spa function alongside the subsequent openings.
“The pump room is an untouched 19th-century original.”
The pavilion was renovated and put into use in July 1948; in 2011 a decision was taken to demolish it and build a new pavilion echoing a gazebo.
“Łazienki III was demolished after the spa collapsed.”
In 1993 it was entered in the register of monuments; after 1994 it was rebuilt as an art gallery and a nature observatory.
“The mines were opened in one go.”
The material lists four openings: 1962, 1965, 1969 and 1971.

What was removed from V2, and why

  • Claim checker with verdicts. Replaced by the four captions alongside. The quotations from V1 were also removed, because they cannot be compared with the original here.
  • Year-gap calculator. It repeated what the axis gives. The only gap that carries knowledge (1962–1994) is written out once, with a caveat about days.
  • Field notebook. Removed. This page saves nothing in the browser. Notes from version V2 (key atlas-v2-98) are neither read nor deleted here.
  • Photograph of the park from 2012. Not embedded, because the page is meant to work offline; the link remains in the sources.

What was kept

  • The year slider, the year field and the jumps to dates, now with a single shared cross-section for the three sites.
  • A count of the mine openings listed (four entries from the material), with no claims about the mines' later operation.
  • Source links and observation questions from the three field sites.

Sources and things to check

The addresses were carried over from version V2. They were not opened or checked in this version; the descriptions and dates come from the V1/V2 material.

  1. Górnicza historia naszego miasta [Mining history of our town]: calendar of the mines, opening dates and town rights (City Hall of Jastrzębie-Zdrój).
  2. Historia jastrzębskiej pijalni wód [History of the Jastrzębie pump room]: history of the pavilion, the 1948 reconstruction and the end of the spa's activity in 1994 (City Hall of Jastrzębie-Zdrój).
  3. Otwarcie Galerii Sztuki Współczesnej Łazienki III [Opening of the Łazienki III Contemporary Art Gallery]: history of the treatments, the 1993 register of monuments and the adaptation (City Hall of Jastrzębie-Zdrój).
  4. Galeria Historii Miasta [City History Gallery]: spa souvenirs, the Spółka Bracka building and a marble bath from 1862 (MOK Jastrzębie-Zdrój).
  5. Photograph “Park Zdrojowy” [Spa Park], 2012, photo by Marcin Konsek, Wikimedia Commons, licence CC BY-SA 4.0. Link from V2; not embedded in this version. It shows the present-day state, not the historic resort.

To check before treating as fact

  • The start of the pump room (V2: “19th century”) and the start of the park.
  • Whether and in which years the pump room operated during the war; the 1939–1947 interval is an assumption of the model, not a date from the material.
  • The day and nature of the end of the spa in 1994, and whether the pump room and Łazienki III end with the same act.
  • The dates of the municipality taking over the pump room, of the summer café, of the demolition and of the completion of the new pavilion.
  • The state of Łazienki III in c. 1945–1948, and the dates of the rebuilding and of the gallery opening.
  • The function of the park after 1994 (the sentence about recreation comes from V2 without a separate source).
  • The dates of the mine openings and of the town rights against the calendar [1], and the boundaries “c. 1920” and “c. 1945”.
  • Access and opening hours of the sites: not checked.
