Scope of the source search: the IPN biography, the NID record, one photograph from 2014 and a watch log that is not here. This is the state of the collected material, not proof that such a log never existed. Sources and what needs checking.

One task

Choose a claim. See which sentence supports it.

The sentences in the columns are the editors’ summaries, not quotations from the sources. A yellow background marks the decisive passage or, when nothing is decisive, the limit of the source search. A dotted underline marks the sentence in a document that comes closest to the claim but does not settle it; the reason is given in the comment below the sentences in the same column.

Without JavaScript, claim selection is disabled. Below, the four documents can be read without highlights, and the open list ‘All 20 relations’ shows what the selection would show.

Biography of Leon Wzorek

Klaudia Słojkowska, ‘Leon Wzorek: Latarnia musi się świecić’ [‘Leon Wzorek: The lighthouse must shine’]

IPN describes Wzorek’s service on ORP Pomorzanin in 1920–1921, with the rank of boatswain. This is evidence of a stage of his life, not of a watch in the lighthouse.

The IPN biography places the start of his post at Rozewie in 1922. A date given only to the year is not a breakdown of night work.

The IPN biography links Wzorek with the creation of the Żeromski Memorial Room in 1933. It documents cultural activity, not the tasks of tending the light.

IPN refers to an archival album; the rights to reproduce it remain to be established.

B · NID record

Heritage register entry: Rozewie I

National Heritage Board of Poland (NID), object A-574

The NID record describes two lighthouses operating at the same time in 1875–1910. We do not treat them as a single installation.

NID describes the modernisations, the engine room, the siren house and successive light sources. Linking this equipment to the biography requires matching dates.

Each fact keeps its own date and type of evidence.

Photograph of the structure (2014)

Robert Melon, Wikimedia Commons, 13 November 2014. The photograph is not embedded because the page works offline; open it via link 3.

Rozewie, 13 November 2014. The photograph of the structure does not show Wzorek, pre-war equipment or a historical night of work.

The photograph from 2014 shows the structure as it was on that date. It does not confirm the biography or the course of a pre-war night.

D · gap in the source search

Lighthouse watch log

Direct evidence of a single watch. Absent from this source search.

This set does not document the activities and weather of a single night. A proper, dated piece of evidence would be needed, e.g. a shift log. Its absence from this sample does not prove that it does not exist.

This is the limit of the material in this sample. It does not reconstruct any particular shift and does not prove that the log does not exist.

All 20 relations (5 claims × 4 sources)

The assessment ‘not decisive’ applies to the scope of this source search and to the editors’ summaries. It is not proof that the event did not take place.

Leon Wzorek took up his post at Rozewie in 1922

  • A · IPN biography: ConfirmsThe summary of the IPN biography gives 1922 as the time he took up the post. A date given to the year is not an hour-by-hour breakdown of individual nights.
  • B · NID record: Not decisiveThe summary of the NID record contains no date of Wzorek’s personal appointment; the record concerns the structure and its equipment.
  • C · 2014 photograph: Not decisiveThe photograph documents the state of things in 2014 and does not settle pre-war biographical dates.
  • D · Watch log: Not decisiveThe absence of the log from this source search marks the limit of knowledge in this set and does not prove that the document did not exist.

In 1920–1921 Leon Wzorek served as a boatswain on ORP Pomorzanin

  • A · IPN biography: ConfirmsThe summary of the IPN biography gives service on ORP Pomorzanin with the rank of boatswain. This is a stage of his life before his work in the lighthouse, not a watch.
  • B · NID record: Not decisiveThe record of a land-based structure concerns the building; the summary contains no ship crews.
  • C · 2014 photograph: Not decisiveA modern photograph does not settle service on a vessel in 1920.
  • D · Watch log: Not decisiveThe absence of the log from this source search settles nothing here and does not prove that the document did not exist.

In 1875–1910 two lighthouses operated at Rozewie at the same time

  • A · IPN biography: Not decisiveThe biography concerns the 1920s and 1930s; the summary contains no 19th-century configuration of the lights at Rozewie.
  • B · NID record: ConfirmsThe summary of the NID record speaks of two lighthouses operating at the same time in 1875–1910.
  • C · 2014 photograph: Not decisiveThe photograph from 2014 neither confirms nor denies the former configuration of two lights.
  • D · Watch log: Not decisiveThe absence of the log from this source search does not prove that the document did not exist, and does not settle the history of the 19th-century station.

Rozewie has always had only one lighthouse

  • A · IPN biography: Not decisiveThe biography of Leon Wzorek does not settle the history of the station’s expansion in the 19th century.
  • B · NID record: ContradictsThe summary of the NID record describes two lighthouses operating at the same time in 1875–1910, and a single case is enough to refute ‘always just one’.
  • C · 2014 photograph: Not decisiveThe state of things in 2014 says nothing about the number of lighthouses in the past and does not prove that there was always one.
  • D · Watch log: Not decisiveThe absence of the log from this source search does not prove that the document did not exist, and does not settle the number of towers.

We know the activities and the weather of one specific night of Wzorek’s

  • A · IPN biography: Not decisiveThe biography works with dates given to the year (1922, 1933) and a general description. It contains no log of a particular watch and no weather data.
  • B · NID record: Not decisiveThe description of equipment in the NID record is a register of the structure and its apparatus, not a record of tasks on a particular night.
  • C · 2014 photograph: Not decisiveA modern photograph does not record the weather conditions or the lighthouse keeper’s tasks in the 1920s.
  • D · Watch log: Not decisiveThis sample of material lacks a dated record of a single shift, so it does not settle the course of the night. Its absence from the source search does not prove that the log never existed.

Limit of the conclusion

A year is not a night. A 2014 photograph is not 1922.

Person
The IPN summary links Leon Wzorek with the ship ORP Pomorzanin (1920–1921), with taking up his post at Rozewie (1922) and with the Żeromski Memorial Room (1933). These are stages of a life.
Structure
The summary of the NID record speaks of two lighthouses operating at the same time in 1875–1910 and of modernisations, the engine room and the siren house. This is the history of a structure, not of anyone’s shift.
Night
None of these sources describes the hours, the weather or the activities of a single night. A watch log that would settle this is not part of this source search. That does not mean it never existed.

We do not add the times the lamp was lit, the strength of the wind or conversations between lighthouse keepers. Where evidence is missing, the editors say so; imagination does not fill the gap.

Our own schematic, not a document. A linear axis, 1875–2014; the markers are years, not hours. The dates come from the editors’ summaries and need checking against the sources.
A · IPN biography1920–1921 service · 1922 took up post · 1933 Memorial Room
B · NID record1875–1910 two lighthouses at the same time. Modernisations: no dates in this summary, off the axis.
C · Photograph13 November 2014

Off the axis · D · watch log. Date unknown; the document is absent from the source search. An unknown date is not zero and not the end of the axis. On an axis 1000 px wide, one night (about 12 hours) would take up c. 0.01 px, so even a known date of the night would leave no visible mark on this scale.

From V2 to V3

  • Own thesis removed. The page cannot understand arbitrary text, so an ‘analysis’ of a typed-in thesis would be a pretence.
  • Hypothesis and the ‘accurate / caution’ rating removed. The question is not a quiz; each source’s relation to the claim is visible at once.
  • Log in localStorage, export and reset removed. Nothing is saved in the browser.
  • Lighthouse pulse removed. It was decoration with no source content.
  • 5×4 matrix kept as a list below the workshop; the selection reads from it.

A neighbouring topic from V2, ‘Jedna noc latarnika’ [‘One night of a lighthouse keeper’], is mentioned without a link because its address has not been verified here.
