Sketch A: Native lindens A simplified, original sketch of a linden leaf with a notch at the base. Outline in the sketch: the narrowest of the four. Inflorescence in the sketch: an elongated bract and three drawn flowers. Illustrative, not a key for identifying species.
ANative lindensTilia, native species

Linden collection, Wirty Arboretum. Illustrative sketches, not specimens from the collection and not the range of the scent.

Sketch B: Japanese linden A simplified, original sketch of a linden leaf with a notch at the base. Outline in the sketch: second narrowest, slightly wider than the sketch of the native lindens. Inflorescence in the sketch: a narrower bract and two drawn flowers. Illustrative, not a key for identifying species.

Compare two lindens, one difference at a time

Whole silhouettes · everything at once

A · Native lindens — Tilia, native species (e.g. small-leaved and large-leaved linden)

B · Japanese linden — Tilia japonica

Two sketches at one drawing scale; the proportions are simplified, so do not infer the real size of the leaves. “Next difference” lights up one feature at a time and after three returns to the whole silhouettes.

Worded order from the Wirty description, not a timeline

  1. Reference point
    • Native lindens selected as A
  2. Later than the reference point
    • American linden
    • Japanese linden selected as B
The order between these two is not established.
  3. Very late
    • Crimean linden

The source gives no dates or number of days. Missing data is not zero: the columns are a worded order (on a narrow screen or with enlarged text they stack one under another, from the reference point downwards), and their width says nothing about the length of flowering.

Walk card

A single sheet instead of a log kept in the browser. You walk from tree to tree, and at each one there are three stops: leaf, inflorescence, surroundings. The tree number and stage go in a separate field from personal impressions.

The question about scent is an extra. If you cannot smell anything or do not want to write about it, the card keeps its full meaning.

Without a script, use your browser’s print function; only this part of the page will print with the card.

Record of the tree: what can be checked

Number from the plaque
Taxon from the plaque
Date and time
  • buds closed
  • buds opening / first flowers
  • full bloom
  • flowering ending
  • young fruits forming
  • no signs of flowering

A visit records what you saw that day, not the start of flowering. “I did not see it” does not mean “it did not flower”.

  1. Stop 1 · leafOutline: more elongated or rounder? Margin: smooth or toothed? Sketch it in the box.
  2. Stop 2 · inflorescenceIs a bract visible on the stalk of the inflorescence? Open flowers or only buds?
  3. Stop 3 · surroundingsSun or shade? What is happening around: insects, wind, rain?

My impression: entirely optional

  • I skip this question
  • I smell nothing
  • faint, up close
  • distinct, under the crown
  • intense, from a distance

In your own words (this is one person’s impression, not a measurement):

Instead of scent: my observation

What do I hear and see under the crown: insects, light, shade? In my own words:

Limits and what was removed from V2

Model The sketches are our own and illustrative: they do not come from the Wirty source, are not specimens from the collection or a key for identifying species, and their descriptions in the comparison refer to the drawings only. The names and sketches should be confirmed by the collection’s curator.

Source The season is only a worded order from the description of the Wirty collection, not re-checked at the source in this version:

  • native lindens: the reference point for the whole season,
  • American linden: late-flowering,
  • Japanese linden: later than the small-leaved linden,
  • Crimean linden: very late.

This is not a date, a forecast or a promise of a fragrant weekend. Microclimate and the course of the year can shift the timing on a particular tree.

Missing The material contains no collection numbers of the trees, no route and no directions. Enter the number from the plaque by the tree, and check access to the grounds with the arboretum administration. This page does not indicate a route.

Scent A screen does not reproduce scent, and the page neither measures it nor links it to weather or stage.

What was removed from V2 and why

  • The visit log saved in the browser (key atlas-v2-106) was replaced by a sheet of paper. Saving on the phone added no knowledge. V3 neither stores nor reads anything; V2 entries, if you have any, remain in the browser settings, where you can delete them.
  • The analyser of the influence of weather on scent was removed. A few entries of your own do not allow conclusions about causes.
  • Three “sample observations” were removed. They were marked as demonstrations but looked like field notes.
  • Worded columns replaced the horizontal bands. The width and overlap of the bands suggested a duration of flowering that the source does not give.
  • The photo from Commons became a link so that the page works without a network connection.

Kept the pairwise comparison following the Wirty description, the rule that seasons from different years are not compared with each other (the “Year” field on the card), and the option of skipping scent.

Sources

  • Lasy Państwowe, Arboretum Wirty: Kolekcje [State Forests, Wirty Arboretum: Collections] (in Polish). Composition of the collection (about 20 linden taxa) and relative descriptions of the season. The link and content were taken over from V2; in this version they were neither opened nor checked. This is a comparison against the source, not a forecast or a report on current flowering.
  • Small-leaved linden, photo by Gmihail (Wikimedia Commons), licence CC BY-SA 3.0 Serbia. A botanical photograph from 2007, not a specimen from Wirty; link only, not embedded. Description from V2, to be verified.
  • Sketches of leaves and inflorescences: the Atlas’s own drawings (V2, reworked in V3), a graphic model with no third-party rights; they are not botanical documentation.
