The place, the building and the intake each have their own history. Choose a moment and see in which of the three something was recorded – and in which the material is silent.

Without JavaScript only one moment (1910) is shown. All five, for each of the three histories, are in the list below.

Moment 1910Recorded event: building. No record: place, intake – this does not mean ‘no change’.

Place · administrative status

Czerniawa-Zdrój

—no record

No record of status

The material does not describe the administrative status in 1910. The new building does not prove any particular status of the settlement.

Building · Spa House

Spa House

1910recorded event

Second Spa House – Sanatoryjna 48

The new building replaced the first one, from 1860. The town catalogue identifies the 1910 building at Sanatoryjna 48 as the Spa House in Czerniawa, separate from the Spa House in the centre of Świeradów. [2]

Spring intake · mineral waters

Wiktoriaand six other intakes

—no record

No record of the intakes

The material has no separate record of the intakes in 1910. We do not assume that the new building means a change to the intakes, or that the intakes had no history at that time.

What links the three histories at this moment

The recorded change concerns the building, 50 years after the first one. The date refers to the building, not to boundaries or intakes; on the status of the settlement in 1910 the material is silent. [2]

The shortcut that suggests itself here

‘The Spa Houses in Czerniawa and Świeradów are the same building.’

These are two separate buildings: the Czerniawa one stands at Sanatoryjna 48, while the main Spa House is in the centre of Świeradów; they need separate captions. [2]

Three histories, each on its own

This is the full list of the same records, read vertically: one column is one history. A dashed line means no record in the material. It does not mean that nothing happened, or that the previous state continues. Entries marked ‘to be checked’ are readings of an earlier version of the page that were not confirmed here in the source. The current moment is highlighted.

Placeadministrative status

  1. 1783no record
    No record of status

The material gives no administrative status for the settlement in 1783. No record does not mean the place had no history; at the same moment only the discovery of the springs is recorded.

  2. 1860no record
No record of a change of status

The material records no change of status for the settlement in 1860. The construction of the first building is not a record of a change of affiliation.

  3. 1910no record
    No record of status

The material does not describe the administrative status in 1910. The new building does not prove any particular status of the settlement.

  4. 1973recorded event
Village unit (sołectwo) incorporated into Świeradów

On 1 January 1973 the village unit (sołectwo) of Czerniawa-Zdrój was incorporated within the boundaries of Świeradów; the town’s own history also describes the merging of the two spa centres. [3]

  5. Todaystate descriptionto be checked
Part of the town of Świeradów-Zdrój

Today we read Czerniawa as part of the town of Świeradów-Zdrój, not as a separate unit. The name Czerniawa-Zdrój remains the name of the place and its history. The current legal status needs checking. [3]

BuildingSpa House in Czerniawa

  1. 1783no record
    No record of the building

The material mentions no Spa House in 1783; it dates the first building to 1860. [1]

  2. 1860recorded event
    First Spa House

According to the town’s history of Czerniawa, the first Spa House was built then. It was later replaced by a new building in 1910. It is not the building seen in today’s photographs of the entrance. [1]

  3. 1910recorded event
Second Spa House – Sanatoryjna 48

The new building replaced the first one, from 1860. The town catalogue identifies the 1910 building at Sanatoryjna 48 as the Spa House in Czerniawa, separate from the Spa House in the centre of Świeradów. [2]

  4. 1973no record
    No record of the building

The material records no event concerning the building in 1973. The incorporation of the village unit into the town is not in itself a change of the building’s function, owner or status, and the material does not say how the building was then used.

  5. Todaystate descriptionto be checked
    Town catalogue: Sanatoryjna 48

The town catalogue describes the Spa House at Sanatoryjna 48. The material gives neither the current function of the interiors, nor the rules of entry, nor any formal protection status; the renovated façade and the 2013 photograph do not settle this. [2]

Intake‘Wiktoria’ and six others

  1. 1783recorded event
Discovery of the ‘Wiktoria’ spring and six others

The ‘Wiktoria’ spring and six others were discovered. The town’s history stresses a long period when the waters were not used; the discovery did not start the spa at once. [1]

  2. 1860state descriptionto be checked
Start of use of the waters (V2 reading)

An earlier version of the page reads the town’s record as saying that the waters began to serve spa guests together with the first building. The material gives no number of intakes, no details of how they were developed, and no date of the first treatments. [1]

  3. 1910no record
    No record of the intakes

The material has no separate record of the intakes in 1910. We do not assume that the new building means a change to the intakes, or that the intakes had no history at that time.

  4. 1973no record
    No record of the intakes

The material records no change for the intakes in 1973. A change of town boundaries is not a record about the intakes or their use.

  5. Todayno record
No record of the current intakes

The material does not say which intakes exist, are in operation or are accessible. It does not imply any permission to look for or drink the water in the field.

Two buildings in Czerniawa and one that is not

Dates and buildings are the easiest things to confuse. The diagram below separates three things that blur together in conversation into ‘Spa House’, and places beside them a separate layer of administrative affiliation.

1860

First Spa House in Czerniawa

Replaced by a later building. The material gives neither its address nor its appearance.

1910

Second Spa House, Sanatoryjna 48

A building from the town catalogue; today’s identification of the entrance rests on this building.

is not the same building as
date and address: not in the material

Spa House in the centre of Świeradów

A separate building; it needs a separate caption. This page does not describe it.

A separate layer: administrative affiliation. Recorded change: on 1 January 1973 the village unit (sołectwo) of Czerniawa-Zdrój was incorporated within the boundaries of Świeradów [3]. Status of the settlement before that date: no record in the material (to be checked). This layer does not belong to any of the three buildings above and does not in itself change their function.
Diagram of the relations between buildings (own drawing, V3 · Sonnet model). The order follows the town records in the material; it is not a map or plan, and has no distance or time scale.
  1. 1783

Only the history of the intakes changed. Seventy-seven years pass between the discovery of the springs and the first building (1860); the material says the waters long remained unused, but does not describe what happened in the settlement in the meantime. [1]

The discovery of ‘Wiktoria’ started the spa at once.

The material does not support this: the town’s history stresses a long period without use of the waters. [1]

  2. 1860

The recorded change concerns the building. This first building is not the one in today’s photographs of the entrance – it was replaced by the 1910 building. [1][2]

The building in the entrance photograph was built in 1860.

A mix-up of building and date: 1860 is the first Spa House, while the entrance photograph (link only, in the ‘Today’ section) shows the 1910 building at Sanatoryjna 48. [1][2][4]

  3. 1910

The recorded change concerns the building, 50 years after the first one. The date refers to the building, not to boundaries or intakes; on the status of the settlement in 1910 the material is silent. [2]

The Spa Houses in Czerniawa and Świeradów are the same building.

These are two separate buildings: the Czerniawa one stands at Sanatoryjna 48, while the main Spa House is in the centre of Świeradów; they need separate captions. [2]

  4. 1973

The recorded change is purely administrative. The 1910 building and the intakes have no recorded change at this moment – a change of boundaries is not a change in the function of the building. [3]

Czerniawa-Zdrój is today a separate municipality.

Since 1 January 1973 the village unit (sołectwo) of Czerniawa-Zdrój has been within the boundaries of Świeradów; today we read it as part of the town (current legal status to be checked). [3]

  5. Today

Today the three histories do not give a single picture: the place has an administrative description, the building has an address in the catalogue, and on the intakes the material is silent. [2][3]

The renovated façade in the entrance photograph confirms that the interiors are open.

The 2013 entrance photograph (link only, in the ‘Today’ section) shows the façade, plaques and steps; it does not prove the building’s current function or the rules of entry. [4]

Today: what this page does not promise

The closing section is not the last value on the axis. It describes the limit of knowledge with which someone might set out for the valley.

What the entrance photograph shows

  • The entrance to the second Spa House (1910, Sanatoryjna 48): wooden doors under an arch, plaques on the façade and snow-covered steps with green handrails (description from V2; the photograph was not opened during this work).
  • When photographed: the photograph was published in 2013.

What it does not prove

  • That this is the 1860 building (it is its 1910 successor).
  • That the interiors are open today or accessible to spa guests and tourists.
  • That the building has any formal protection status: the material gives no such entry.
  • That Czerniawa is today a separate administrative unit.

The photograph is not embedded on the page, so that it works offline and without someone else’s file. Original: Slawek Ilski, Wikimedia Commons, under CC BY 3.0 according to an earlier version of the page (the licence and attribution must be checked before reuse): file page [4].

This page gives no trails, opening times, directions or access to the intakes and interiors. For what is open, ask the manager of the building or the town office, and in the field respect private property and local regulations.

Sources and limits of the evidence

The content is based on material from earlier versions of the page (V1/V2), which cites studies published by the town of Świeradów-Zdrój. These addresses were not opened or re-verified in this work.

What needs checking

  • Current administrative affiliation and its legal basis.
  • The distinction between the 1860 and 1910 buildings, and the address Sanatoryjna 48, in the original town pages.
  • Entries marked ‘to be checked’ (readings of the earlier version).
  • Licence and attribution of the photograph on Commons.
  • Whether all external addresses and the links between versions work: they were not checked here.

What changed relative to V2, and why

  • The claim verifier was replaced by a single ‘mental shortcut’ for each moment and by the diagram of the buildings.
  • The era-and-scale configurator and the ‘one scale only’ filter were replaced by a view of all three histories at once and a list in columns.
  • The checklist, own distance estimates, notes, saving in the browser and printing were removed: they did not explain the history of the place. V3 saves nothing locally.
  • V2 entries with no basis in the material (among others the status of the settlement in 1783 and 1910, the role of the intakes in 1910 and 1973) were replaced by an explicit ‘no record’.
  • The instructional diagram of the valley was replaced by a stream linking the three rows; it is a sign of relation, not a map.
