Skorocice · Nida Basin

The gypsum karst of Ponidzie The blue line breaks off underground.

In the Skorocice nature reserve a stream dissolves gypsum, vanishes into a swallow hole and flows beneath the rock bar of Wysoka Droga. According to the descriptions in V2 (to be checked in the field), the start and end of this route can be seen from places open to visitors; the middle is known only from descriptions. Change the range of evidence and see when the missing stretch of line may be drawn in.

How to read the line

  • Solid line — an observation from the path (according to the descriptions in V2, to be checked in the field).
  • Dashed frame — a finding from sources: something exists, but we have no route.
  • Dots — a model: an assumption of the drawing, not a measurement.
  • Question mark — no data. It is neither zero nor a route.
Schematic karst cross-section of Skorocice: the blue line of the stream breaks off at a swallow hole Conventional cross-section, not to scale. On the left the stream flows over the surface as a solid blue line and ends at a swallow hole. On the right, on the floor of a collapse depression, the line appears again. Beneath the rise of the Wysoka Droga rock bar between them there is no line, only a question mark. Depending on the selected range of evidence, a dashed frame around the area known from sources and a dotted model line appear. Numbers 1 to 4 mark the sections described below the drawing. A model/diagram, not a map: an original drawing without scale, elevations or depths. The positions of the swallow hole, rock bar, collapse depression and resurgence are symbolic; what matters is the order of the sections and the kind of evidence. On a phone the frame is compressed horizontally.

How much evidence is needed to close the line?

  1. Only what can be seen from the path: the drawing above. Two stretches of solid line and a gap with a question mark.
  2. + findings from sources: a dashed frame appears in the gap — the cave exists, but the sources give no route.
  3. + connection model: a dotted line closes the gap. It is an assumption of the drawing, not a measurement.
Range of evidence used in the drawing

What this means for the line

Range: path observations only

The line has a gap. This range shows the stream before the swallow hole and the stream in the collapse depression, and nothing between them — only a question mark.

In the drawing: 2 stretches of solid line · 0 frames from sources · 0 model lines

What would change the result: a description of the cave from sources (the next range).

Section by section: why the line looks the way it does

A swallow hole and a resurgence are two roles in one circuit of water. Gypsum dissolves in water more readily than limestone, so water can hollow out voids in it, and their roofs sometimes collapse — hence collapse depressions. Choose a section to see what its line rests on and what it lacks.

Observation (per V2)

1 · Stream on the surface

In the drawing: Solid blue line. It is the only kind of line that means: this can be seen from the path.

Why we draw it this way
The water begins its course on the valley floor, on the surface. It can be seen without leaving the path, so the line is solid.
What it rests on
Gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) dissolves in water more readily than limestone; karst here means loss of rock through dissolution, not merely abrasion by the stream. [1] [2]
What is missing
The current state of the water and the exact course of the channel relative to the path — this changes over time and needs inspection in the field. The drawing has no elevations.
In the field
Stay on the marked path of the reserve. Do not go down to the valley floor.
Observation (per V2), to be confirmed

2 · Swallow hole

In the drawing: The solid line ends in a crossbar. The crossbar means: nothing further can be seen.

Why we draw it this way
A swallow hole is a place where surface water drains underground. The stream's disappearance is a change in the flow path, not the end of its course — which is why the line breaks off rather than vanishing without trace.
What it rests on
The Landscape Parks Complex lists the swallow hole among educational sites in Skorocice [4]. Here the stream flows in places over the surface and in places through channels and caves [2] [3].
What is missing
From which point on the path the inlet is visible, and whether it can be viewed safely — this material does not establish that.
In the field
Do not approach the edge of the inlet. View it only from places open to visitors.
Sources (existence) + model (line)

3 · Beneath the Wysoka Droga rock bar

In the drawing: We do not draw it. Nothing can be seen here from the path, so there is only a question mark.

Why we draw it this way
This is where the ranges of evidence make a difference: from the path nothing is visible, sources give a frame, and only the model draws in a line. A drawing speaks of shape and a source of existence — so one does not replace the other.
What it rests on
Two stretches of the valley are separated by a rock bar called Wysoka Droga; they are linked by Skorocicka Cave, whose lowest level serves the stream as its channel [3]. Sources give the cave's length as 352 m — that is the size of the cave, not the distance from swallow hole to resurgence, and not the length of the dotted line.
What is missing
This material contains neither a plan or profile of the cave from speleological documentation nor any measurement of the water's course (for example a tracer test); we do not know whether such data exist. Without them this page has no route, and the dotted line is the simplest possible connection.
In the field
Do not enter the cave. This page does not indicate entrances or approaches; access rules are set by the reserve's manager.
Observation (per V2); resurgence to be confirmed

4 · Collapse depression and resurgence

In the drawing: Solid line from a conventional outflow point. Where the water reaches it from, this range does not say.

Why we draw it this way
The line appears again on the floor of the collapse depression, where the water returns to the surface. From here the stream is visible, so the line is solid; a crossbar marks its beginning.
What it rests on
The Skorocicka valley arose, among other ways, through the collapse of parts of underground channels — today's open depression was once part of a system hidden in the rock [2]. A karst spring is called a resurgence; such forms occur in Skorocice [1] [2].
What is missing
The exact place where this stream returns to the surface, and its link to a particular passage. The position of the outflow in the drawing is symbolic.
In the field
Protect the thermophilous grasslands on dry slopes: do not trample them, keep to the path.

Limits of the drawing and of this page

What the drawing does not say

  • It has no scale, elevations (m a.s.l.) or depths.
  • 352 m is the length of Skorocicka Cave according to IOP PAN. The dotted line does not have this length and is not a route.
  • The positions of the swallow hole, rock bar, collapse depression and resurgence are symbolic. This page must not be used to look for places in the field.
  • The question mark means a lack of data in this material. It is neither zero nor the answer “no”.
  • The content was taken over from the earlier version (V2) and has not been re-checked against the sources; the addresses need editorial checking.
Nature reserve The Skorocice reserve protects, among other things, thermophilous grasslands on sunlit slopes. View the area only from places open to visitors. This page does not mark approaches, does not indicate cave entrances and does not replace the rules set by the reserve's manager; check the current visiting rules with the manager.

What changed relative to V2

  • Quiz on kinds of evidence — replaced by visible markers (symbol, name and line style) on each section.
  • Mass balance M = V · c — removed. The concentrations were conventional and did not describe any documented process in Skorocice; the result would have looked like a measurement, which it is not.
  • Notebook saved in the browser — removed. It was not needed to understand the subject; the page stores nothing on the device.
  • The “type of evidence / continuity of the stream” switch — moved into the ranges of evidence. “Continuity” is now the third range and is labelled as a model.
  • Four stages of the stream — kept as sections 1–4 with the same field rules.
  • Photograph from Wikimedia Commons — not embedded, so that the page works without the internet; a link in the sources remains.
