The Vistula castle road · Powiśle

Three castles do not yet make a road

The castles stand in place, but two different lines link them: one based on sources about roads, the other on today's visitor offer. Choose a relation and see what really supports it.

Sources · Malbork – Sztum Gap

The material contains no geometry, distances or attestation of a road between these castles from the Gothic era.

Today · Malbork – Sztum Tourism arrangement

Both castles are on one Gothic Castles Trail (Pomorskie Travel). The material gives no route.

Sources · Kwidzyn – Malbork (course unknown) Dated mention: the 1847 road

The UMK Atlas dates the Kwidzyn–Malbork road to 1847. There is no geometry or chainage; this is the 19th century, a different layer from the Gothic era. It is not known whether it ran through Sztum.

Today · Kwidzyn – Malbork No data

The material does not link today's castle trail with this road. This is a lack of information, not a “yes” or a “no”.

Sources · Kwidzyn – Korzeniewo Catalogue lead of 1832

An entry on a plan of the town and the road to Korzeniewo (UMK Atlas). The plan has not been read.

Today · Kwidzyn – Korzeniewo No data

The material gives no present-day offer or route towards the Vistula.

  • Dated mention (no geometry)
  • Gap: no evidence of a road
  • Trace or lead to check
  • Present-day arrangement, not a road
  • No data (not zero)
This is a diagram, not a map. The order Malbork – Sztum – Kwidzyn follows the V2 material; spacing and line lengths do not denote distances, and no line is a route on the ground. The castle drawings are simplified original symbols (by the Sonnet model), not façades or photographs. The kind of basis is conveyed by the line pattern, not by colour.

Basis of the selected relation

Two questions side by side: do the sources attest a link, and what does a visit today offer. With JavaScript on, you see the relation chosen above; without JavaScript, all five relations are listed below in turn.

Whole axis: Malbork – Sztum – Kwidzyn

Castles in the relation: Malbork, Sztum, Kwidzyn

Question 1 · historical link

Gap: no evidence of a single road

What the material attests
Three Gothic castles, the exit from Kwidzyn through the Malbork Gate to the north, and the later road of 1847. A common road in the 15th century is not attested in it.
What it does not settle
There is no geometry or distances for a medieval road; no route or reconstruction of the whole Malbork – Sztum – Kwidzyn has been determined.
Basis
Pomorskie Travel; Atlas Historyczny Miast Polskich — Kwidzyn (UMK) [Historical Atlas of Polish Towns] (status of sources).

Question 2 · visit today

Tourism arrangement

Role today
The Gothic Castles Trail (Pomorskie Travel) is a regional tourism product linking heritage sites. The material gives no designated road or cycling route.
Hint
The length of the axis is not given. You can enter your own value in the section “Optional: time for your own visit”.

Visiting shared architectural heritage is a different question from reconstructing an old road. The existence of the castles does not prove the course of a road.

Northern section: Malbork – Sztum

Castles in the relation: Malbork, Sztum

Question 1 · historical link

Gap

What the material attests
The shared reconstruction date in the Pomorskie Travel material (early 15th century) concerns the castles, not the road between them.
What it does not settle
There is no geometry of a road, no distances and no attestation of the former course of the Malbork – Sztum road in the Gothic era.
Basis
Pomorskie Travel (reconstructions from the early 15th century; status of sources).

Question 2 · visit today

Tourism arrangement

Role today
A shared tourism product links both castles. The route is not designated in the material.
Hint
The length of the section is not given; the time calculator needs your value.

A shared tourism product links two heritage sites, but does not prove a former, continuous road.

Southern section: Sztum – Kwidzyn

Castles in the relation: Sztum, Kwidzyn

Question 1 · historical link

Trace of direction

What the material attests
The UMK Atlas describes the Malbork Gate in Kwidzyn and the exit to the north, towards Malbork.
What it does not settle
The direction at the gate does not reproduce the whole road, the crossings or the section through Sztum. There is no route length.
Basis
Atlas Historyczny Miast Polskich — Kwidzyn (UMK) [Historical Atlas of Polish Towns] (status of sources).

Question 2 · visit today

Tourism arrangement

Role today
A link within the Gothic Castles Trail; the route is not designated in the material.
Hint
There are no measurement data; enter your own length in the calculator.

We have a trace of the direction of departure from Kwidzyn. The continuation of the road through Sztum remains to be checked.

1847 road: Kwidzyn – Malbork

Castles in the relation: Kwidzyn, Malbork

Question 1 · historical link

Dated mention

What the material attests
The UMK Atlas dates the building of the road from Kwidzyn to Malbork to 1847 and describes this link.
What it does not settle
The material gives neither the geometry of the course nor chainage, nor any basis for treating sections through Sztum as a medieval road.
Basis
Atlas Historyczny Miast Polskich — Kwidzyn (UMK) [Historical Atlas of Polish Towns] (status of sources).

Question 2 · visit today

No data

Role today
The material does not link today's castle trail with this road. This is neither a “yes” nor a “no” — it is a lack of information.
Hint
There is no chainage; the calculator will accept only a length that you set yourself.

This is dated information about a 19th-century road — a different layer from earlier roads, not a road of the Gothic era.

Vistula branch: Kwidzyn – Korzeniewo (1832 plan)

Castle in the relation: Kwidzyn (Korzeniewo is a point on the Vistula, not a castle)

Question 1 · historical link

Catalogue lead

What the material attests
The Atlas catalogues an 1832 plan of the town and the road to Korzeniewo as a separate lead to a link with the Vistula.
What it does not settle
A catalogue entry is not a reading of the plan, nor evidence of crossing facilities or a permanent transport corridor. There is no route or distance.
Basis
Atlas Historyczny Miast Polskich — Kwidzyn (UMK) [Historical Atlas of Polish Towns] (status of sources).

Question 2 · visit today

No data

Role today
The material gives no present-day offer or route towards the Vistula. This is a research question, not a tourism product.
Hint
Direction towards the Vistula; the length in the calculator is solely your own assumption.

A catalogue mention is a lead to check, not proof of an old road or crossing.

What stands in place

Each castle has its own role in the material and its own limit on what it proves.

Malbork

Gothic castle on the Nogat

The material attestsA castle included by Pomorskie Travel in the Gothic Castles Trail (reconstruction from the early 15th century). It also appears as the northern reference point of the 1847 road and in the relation of the road from Toruń to Gdańsk (a mention from V2, to be checked).

It does not proveThe castle itself is not proof of the course of a road in the 15th century.

Source: Pomorskie Travel; UMK Atlas.

Sztum

Gothic castle

The material attestsA castle covered by the shared Gothic Castles Trail (reconstruction from the early 15th century).

It does not proveThe material contains no attested geometry of a road linking Sztum with Malbork or Kwidzyn in the Gothic era.

Source: Pomorskie Travel (reconstructions of the early 15th century).

Kwidzyn

Gothic castle and gdanisko

The material attestsA castle with a characteristic gdanisko. The UMK Atlas points to the Malbork Gate as the exit to the north, the 1847 road and the catalogued plan of 1832.

It does not proveThe castle and gdanisko document architecture, not the course of an old road or crossing.

Optional: time for your own visit (arithmetic on your assumptions)

Selected relation: Whole axis: Malbork – Sztum – Kwidzyn. Number of castles to visit: 3.

The material gives no length for any relation. Without your value there is no result.

Result on your assumptions

—

On the way: —

Castle visits: —

No result: the material gives no route length. Enter your own value in km.

The time for one castle is rounded to a full minute, and visiting is the number of castles times that value; the total is the sum of its components. This is not a timetable, not opening hours and not permission to travel through.

Limits and what to check

What this diagram is not

  • It is not a map or a route: spacing and line lengths are not distances.
  • It gives no course to download, no navigation, and no permission to travel through or enter land.
  • The castle drawings are simplified symbols, not façades or photographs.
  • The dates 1847 and 1832, the Malbork Gate and the Pomorskie Travel trail come from the V1/V2 material; their sources were not reopened when this version was built.

To check before accepting as fact

  1. In the UMK Atlas (Kwidzyn): the content of the mentions of the 1847 road, the Malbork Gate and the 1832 plan, and whether any geometry exists.
  2. Whether the 1847 road ran through Sztum — the material does not settle this.
  3. Pomorskie Travel: the current composition of the trail, the dating of the reconstructions (early 15th century) and the availability of the sites.
  4. The mention of Malbork's role in the Toruń – Gdańsk relation (from V2, without a separate source).
  5. Rights to the photograph of Kwidzyn from V2, should it return.

What changed relative to V2

  • The relation tabs no longer switch a single view: both lines are visible at once, and the buttons merely indicate a relation.
  • The field notebook in localStorage has been removed: nothing here needs saving, and the page stores nothing in the browser. The list of questions above replaces it.
  • The calculator is collapsed as a practical option. Kept: no result without a length, rounding of minutes so that “60 min” never appears, and a consistent total.
  • The photograph of the Kwidzyn walls, loaded from an external server, has been removed from rendering because the page is meant to work offline.

Sources and their status

The descriptions come from the V2 material. None of the addresses below was reopened when this version was built; they are clickable links, not dependencies of the page.
