1711 Warsaw's first pilgrimage to Jasna Góra

Object · July 1711

Silver, repoussé votive plaque

Deposited by Warsaw pilgrims in the Chapel of the Miraculous Image, according to a museum study. This is a description taken from that study. We have no reproduction, so we neither draw nor show the plaque.

Course of the journey · Warsaw – Jasna Góra

We do not know the route of the march.

The material cited contains no company registers and no list of stops. This field is empty on purpose: it has no line because there is nothing to derive one from. Details: the third statement below; reference to check: src. 2, p. 176, note 5.

The gift, the vow and the month of arrival have support in the material. The road they took has none. This page shows how one does not follow from the other, and it is neither a guide nor a plan for a present-day pilgrimage.

Three kinds of material, three different ranks

The object, the record of the event and the jubilee memory do not speak about 1711 with the same weight. The first two describe 1711, the third describes 2011. Values that the material does not give are described as missing, not as zero.

1 · Object

What we know about the votive offering

Material and technique
silver, repoussé work
Place of deposition
Chapel of the Miraculous Image
Dimensions
not given in the material
Inscription and depiction
not given in the material
Present location
not given in the material
Reproduction
none; the holder's consent has not been obtained

Type of evidence: a description in a 2011 study with a reference to a manuscript. The object itself was not examined here. src. 2

2 · Record of the 1711 event

What we know about the arrival

When
July 1711 (arrival)
Who
20 pilgrims from the Confraternity of the Five Wounds of the Lord Jesus
Why
thanksgiving for the city being spared from the plague
What they did
candlelit procession from St Barbara's Church, the gift of a votive offering, a vow to return every year
Departure from Warsaw
not given in the material
Route, overnight stops, number of days
not given in the material

Type of evidence: a 2011 study (src. 2) and a 2018 announcement (src. 3). The source from the period, a manuscript (src. 1), is known to us only from a footnote.

3 · Memory of 2011

A later layer

What
a new plaque modelled on the gift of 1711; the pledge renewed before entering Częstochowa
When
August 2011 (according to the V2 material)

This is a record of the jubilee, not evidence about 1711. Today's August date does not determine the dates of the first journey. src. 2, p. 188 (to be checked). The publication chronology of the volume relative to August 2011 and the authorship of the jubilee description need checking.

Three statements that are easy to repeat

Expand a statement to see its basis and its limit side by side. Then try to extend it the way people usually do: the assessment will show whether the extension stays within the material. There are no points and no correct answers to be scored.

Expanded: 0 of 3
Statement 1 · object Warsaw pilgrims deposited a silver, repoussé votive plaque in the Chapel of the Miraculous Image. Show the basis and the limitHide

Basis

The museum study (src. 2) describes the gift and refers in a footnote to the Jasna Góra manuscript Tomus primus Miraculorum (src. 1).

Type: a modern study that points to a source from the period. The manuscript was not opened in this project.

Limit of the conclusion

This is a description of the object, not documentation of it. Dimensions, inscription, depiction and present place of storage are not given in the material.

That is why the page neither shows an image of the votive offering nor draws one.

Try extending it

No supportThe material speaks of the gift being deposited in 1711, not of its later fate. The present location of the votive offering is a question for the holder of the collection.

Has supportThe study places the pilgrims' arrival in July 1711. The support is indirect: the 2011 study refers to a manuscript that was not opened here.

Carries over a later layerThe 2011 plaque is modelled on the 1711 gift, but the material does not describe the appearance of either. Neither shape nor inscription may be carried over from one to the other.

Choose an extension to see whether the basis of the statement covers it.

Statement 2 · record of the event In July 1711 twenty pilgrims from the Confraternity of the Five Wounds of the Lord Jesus reached Jasna Góra and vowed to return every year. Show the basis and the limitHide

Basis

The month of July, the procession from St Barbara's and the vow come from the 2011 study (src. 2). The organiser and the number 20 are given in the Archdiocese's announcement of 2018 (src. 3).

Type: two later accounts. Evidence from the period reaches us only indirectly, through a footnote to src. 1.

Limit of the conclusion

The statement speaks of the arrival and the vow. It does not say when they set out, which way they went or how long it took.

The number 20 comes from the 2018 announcement and needs to be checked in the study or the manuscript.

Try extending it

Contradicts the materialThe study places the arrival in July 1711, which cannot be reconciled with an August departure. Today's date is a later practice and does not determine the dates of the first journey.

No supportThe material cited contains no list of stops or overnight stays for the first journey. Today's places come from a different period.

Has support as the participants' motiveThe material describes thanksgiving for the city being spared from the plague. This is a record of a religious intention, not an explanation of why the epidemic died out.

Choose an extension to see whether the basis of the statement covers it.

Statement 3 · route Which way they went, where they stayed overnight and how many days the march lasted: the material cited does not say. Show the basis and the limitHide

Basis

The museum study (src. 2, p. 176, note 5) records, according to the summary in the V2 material, the absence of surviving company registers from the 18th century and the absence of a list of stops for the first journey.

This is a summary, not a verbatim quotation. The wording of the footnote needs to be checked.

Limit of the conclusion

The absence of registers in this material is a gap in the documents, not proof that the route was one or another. Other sources may exist that were not checked here.

That is why the page draws no line and gives neither stops nor a number of days.

Try extending it

No supportThe 2011 jubilee documents the continuity of the tradition and the vow, not the course of the road in 1711. Today's trail is a question for the sources, not their answer.

Too strongThe material speaks of the absence of registers and of a list of stops in the sources cited. That is the state of this material, not proof that establishing the route is impossible.

Has support in the V2 summary (unchecked)This agrees with the V2 summary of the footnote (p. 176, note 5), not with a quotation. Caveat: the wording of the footnote must be checked in the Yearbook.

What is missing here and why

Removed from version V2

  • The Warsaw – St Barbara – Jasna Góra axis with a layer switch. The “gap” band looked like a stretch of road and suggested spatial continuity. It has been replaced by an empty field and statement 3.
  • An auditor of six claims with scoring. Reduced to three statements with a basis and a limit, with no score. The claim about 2011 has been moved to material kind no. 3.
  • A sheet for assessing one's own note, and a notebook kept in browser storage. Removed: they were not needed, and free-form entries encouraged producing hypotheses. This version saves nothing. If V2 was used, data under the key atlas-v2-64 may have remained in the browser; V3 does not read it.
  • A photograph of Jasna Góra from 2013. It does not concern 1711 and was loaded from the internet, so it would not work offline. Only the reference remains (src. 4).

Kept from V2

  • The separation of three layers: 1711, possible extrapolation and the memory of 2011. These are now kinds of material, and extrapolation is an extension to be assessed.
  • Distinguishing faith from medicine: thanksgiving for being spared from the plague is not an epidemiological explanation.
  • Source references and no invented route.

All facts come from the material supplied with version V2, not from a new source search. The sources were not reopened here. We treat the summaries in quotation marks in V2 as summaries, not as quotations.

Status: the author and title of the article are not given in the material; the pages and the footnote are to be checked in the volume. The publication chronology of the volume relative to August 2011 and the authorship of the jubilee description (p. 188) also need checking.
