Prosna · the same matter, the other bank

The Prosna border

The same question put to both banks. The material we have speaks almost entirely about the right one — the left stays empty, because the lack of a document is not the lack of an office.

Who guarded the border at Kwileń?

Left bank

western side · place not specified

  • No document

The sheet has no source on a supervision post on this bank. This is a gap in the material, not proof that there was no post.

Right bank · Kwileń

Chocz commune · right bank of the Prosna according to [1]

  • Document · summary of the source

Border guard post and guard building

The account of Kwileń's history records them in 1884.

    Record from 1884. [1]

Limitation: a record from a single year does not say when the post was set up or when it disappeared.

Difference and gapThe document is on the right side only. The left bank is empty in the material: the difference concerns sources and does not prove a difference between institutions.

A diagram, not a map. The unequal column widths reflect the unequal amount of material in the sheet, not the importance of the banks. The cards summarise numbered sources — they are not quotations.

Dates with a record in the sheet

This is a sequence, not a scale: the spacing does not reflect the number of years. Undated records are not on this list (they are further down, in the chapter on Skalmierzyce).

  1. 1815Kwileń: part of the Kingdom of Poland [1]
  2. 1818Skalmierzyce: decision on a customs office [2]
  3. 1884Kwileń: guard post recorded [1]
  4. 1896Skalmierzyce: railway link to Ostrów [2]
  5. 1978Insurgents' monument with two pillars [3]
  6. 2000Green trail Szczypiorno–Nowe Skalmierzyce [3]

Which state did the bank belong to?

State as at year 1884

Left bank

western side · place not specified

  • V2 claim · no source in the sheet

The Prussian side — the western side of the partition after the Congress of Vienna

    From 1815.

Limitation: a sentence taken over from V2 without a numbered source. To be checked before publication; it does not count as a document.

Right bank · Kwileń

Chocz commune

  • Document · summary of the source

Kwileń belonged to the Kingdom of Poland

The commune's account gives the right bank of the Prosna as belonging to the Kingdom of Poland from 1815.

    From 1815. [1]

Difference and gapThe document is on the right side only. The left bank is empty in the material: the difference concerns sources and does not prove a difference between institutions. A V2 claim without a source does not count as a document.

Questions this material does not answer

These questions were in the plan for the page. The sheet has no document on them for either bank, so we set nothing side by side here and add nothing from another place.

  • Which way did people go to the market?

Left bankNo document in the sheet.

Right bankNo document in the sheet.

  • Where was the school?

Left bankNo document in the sheet.

Right bankNo document in the sheet.

  • What did trade across the river look like?

Left bankNo document in the sheet.

Right bankNo document in the sheet.

An empty row means a gap in the material. It does not say that there were no roads, schools or trade.

Nowe Skalmierzyce — a separate chapter

This is not another stage of the same walk along the Prosna. The sheet does not establish on which side of the river the infrastructure described here lies, so these records do not stand in for the left bank in the questions above.

Position relative to the bank: not established in the sheet. V2 entered these data in a “Prussia” column without justification — that assignment has been withdrawn.

State as at year 1884

Customs

  • Administrative record

    Customs office at Szczypiorno

The town's account mentions a decision of 1818 to set up a customs office in Skalmierzyce; it is called the “old customs house”.

    Record from 1818. [2]

Limitation: this is the date of the decision, not proof of the date of opening or closing.

Railway

  • Record of opening

    Connection with Ostrów

In January 1896 a railway connection with Ostrów was opened. The description of the trail [3] mentions the former station at plac Wolności.

    Record from 1896. [2] [3]

Limitation: the sheet gives neither timetables nor the later fate of the line.

  • No date in the sheet

    A later, larger station

V2 showed it in a photograph from 2013 (link in [4]) and described it as later than the station of 1896. The sheet has no construction date, so it is not placed on the timeline.

Traces and memory

  • Commemorative marker

    Insurgents' monument with two pillars

According to the PTTK description, the two pillars symbolise the partitions. We read them as a commemorative marker from 1978; the sheet does not describe them as original.

    From 1978. [3]

  • Sightseeing route

    Green trail Szczypiorno–Nowe Skalmierzyce

Waymarked in 2000, 11 km according to the PTTK description. The sheet does not state that it runs along the former border.

    From 2000. [3]

Limitation: this is a description of a route, not an encouragement to go out into the field. Check the condition of the trail with its maintainer.

  • Modern exhibit · undated

    “Granica” square: booths and boards

The town's account says this is a modern exhibit. We do not treat its elements as surviving equipment of the crossing. [2]

  • No document

    Original border markers

The sheet gives neither the location nor the state of preservation of the former border posts.

Difference and gapFor 1884 the sheet has a record for: customs. The square and the later station have no date and are not part of this comparison. Changing the year does not switch everything on at once: customs begins in 1818, the railway in 1896, memorial markers in 1978 and 2000.

The present-day look of these places does not prove the influence of the partitions. This page does not claim it.

Explanation and limits

How to read the cards

  • Document. A summary of a numbered source. Not a quotation.
  • V2 claim without a source. To be checked; it does not count as a document.
  • No document. A gap in the material. Not zero and not proof of absence.
  • Undated. A record whose date the sheet does not give. It is not placed on the timeline.

What the year does

The year is a cut-off: it shows what the sheet has from that date or earlier. Dates mean different things — “from” (belonging, monument, trail) or “record from” (guard post, customs decision, opening of the line) — so for a record from a single year the page does not claim that the thing lasted afterwards or existed earlier. Before the date of a record, the card says that the sheet has nothing here, not that the thing did not exist. Enter 1815 and check: the station of 1896 is not yet in the material.

What changed relative to V2

  • Counter of facts and gaps — removed. It turned the unevenness of sources into a score. Now it shows in the layout: a document on one side, an empty field on the other.
  • Two state selectors and a topic filter — replaced by a single year. The states 1815, 1884 and today remain as buttons; 1896 has been added. All the questions are visible at once, so the filter is unnecessary.
  • Relic verifier — moved. The type of each trace (commemorative marker, route, modern exhibit) stands next to the trace, and “station in 1815” is settled by the year alone.
  • Observation log (localStorage) — dropped. It added no knowledge about the sources. The page saves nothing in the browser; any old V2 entries stay with their author.
  • Photograph of the station — not embedded. V2 fetched it from the internet, and this page is meant to work offline. The link remains in the sources.
  • Withdrawn as unsupported: the assignment of Skalmierzyce to “Prussia”, the sentence about “full freedom of access to the riverbed”, the “1815–1918” heading without a source, and sentences given in V2 as quotations that have not been checked here.

What we do not know

  • Whether sources [1]–[3] say exactly what the sheet summarises — the links were taken over from V2 and were not opened when building this version.
  • On which side of the Prosna the Skalmierzyce infrastructure lies, and what stood on the left bank opposite Kwileń.
  • Anything about the road to the market, the school and trade.
  • The river in the drawing is a diagram, not the course of the channel.

All the links come from V2. They need checking: they are not marked here as verified, and the descriptions below are summaries from the sheet.
