Białowieża Forest · Hajnówka–Topiło
Eleven kilometres amid a vanished network
The thick green line is the only route the material describes as operating today: Hajnówka–Topiło, 11 km (currency to be checked). The grey and dashed traces around it are the former timber-haulage network, built from 1916 — with unknown section dates and unknown length.

11 kmtoday’s Hajnówka–Topiło route — not a measure of the whole history of the network
A note on time: the grey and dashed lines are traces of the former network from the period 1916–1991; the material gives no dates for the sections, so it is not known which of them existed at the same time. Do not read the diagram as a single state of the network. Green is today’s route (according to the Forest District — to be checked).
- Tourist route operating today, 11 km (currency: check with the Hajnówka Forest District).
- Former permanent line, period 1916–1991; section dates unknown, broken off in the diagram.
- Portable track laid for felling; no dates or location.
- Ponds at Topiło (from 1932/33) and the viaduct (location c. 6 km — approximate, to be checked).
Task: compare
The same station, two periods side by side
Choose a place, then a period in field A and in field B. You will see what appears, ceases or endures at that station — and where the material is silent. The five periods are cut-off points, not snapshots of a state: the absence of a description does not mean that something did not exist.
Without scripts: the interactive comparison requires JavaScript. You will find the same data in the table and in the station descriptions below.
A former track is not a trail. View the forest from the tourist route or from paths marked out by the forest district; this page does not point to places to enter the terrain.

Comparison data: status table and station descriptions
The statuses “described without dates”, “absent from the material” and “no data” denote a gap or an inference from the material, not proof that the phenomenon did not exist. “Operating according to the Forest District” and “exists according to the material” refer to descriptions in the V2 material — their currency needs checking, and the page gives no date of checking.

Basis: S1 (1916, 1929, 1991, portable track), S2 (reservoirs 1932/33), S3 (the 11 km route) — links retained from V2, not opened in this version. Reservoirs “not yet there” before 1932/33: the construction date is given in S2. Tourist services “absent from the material” before 1991: this is an inference from the date when the tourist function began, not proof that there were no services — so the comparison treats it as a caveat, not as a firm result.
Station descriptions in successive periods
Hajnówka
- 1916
- Start of construction of the forest railway under German military administration during the First World War; prisoners of war and the local population worked on it (S1).
- 1929
- The forest railways are taken over by the State Forests Directorate in Białowieża after a period of management by the company “Centura” (S1).
- 1932/33
- The sawmills in Hajnówka receive the timber (V1: it went, among other places, to sawmills); reservoirs for preserving it are built in the Perebel valley (S2).
- 1991
- Rail transport of the raw material ceases; the Hajnówka–Topiło route is given a tourist function. This is a change of task, not the preservation of the whole former network (V1).
- Today
- The forest railway station of the Hajnówka Forest District is the starting point of the ride along the 11 km section (S3). Dates and rules of access: check with the organiser.
Viaduct in the Leśna Prawa valley
- 1916
- The material does not say whether the viaduct already existed or when it was built. One must not infer from this either “it was there” or “it was not”.
- 1929
- The material gives no construction date for the viaduct; its state in 1929 remains unknown.
- 1932/33
- In the V2 description the Hajnówka–Topiło line is an important haulage artery, but the construction date of the viaduct is still not known.
- 1991
- The route gains a tourist function; the construction date of the viaduct is still not known.
- Today
- The track on the viaduct in the Leśna Prawa valley can be seen in a photograph from 2009 (Wikimedia Commons, link in the sources). A location of c. 6 km from Hajnówka is an approximate value from the V2 diagram — to be checked.
Topiło
- 1916
- There are no reservoirs in the Perebel valley yet — according to the material they were built in 1932/33. The course of the track at this place in 1916 is not described.
- 1929
- The reservoirs do not exist yet (they are built in 1932/33). Whether and when the track reached Topiło — no date in the material.
- 1932/33
- Reservoirs are built in the Perebel valley. Submerging timber cuts off the supply of oxygen and serves to preserve it, so the ponds have an industrial origin (S2).
- 1991
- Timber haulage by rail ceases. The material does not describe the state of the reservoirs in 1991; do not infer it from neighbouring years.
- Today
- The end of the 11 km section, by ponds created in 1932/33 (S2, S3). Access to the terrain and paths: announcements of the Hajnówka Forest District.
Former sidings (felling sites)
- 1916
- Portable track was laid where felling was under way (S1). The material gives neither dates nor locations for individual sections — this item has no location; the dashed branch in the diagram is only a conventional sign.
- 1929
- V2 description: crews moved the track to suit particular felling sites. No dates or locations of sections.
- 1932/33
- V2 description: portable track brought timber from the felling sites to the permanent lines. No dates or locations of sections.
- 1991
- Haulage ceased and the working branches stopped operating (V2); only the 11 km route was kept. Traces in the terrain are not trails.
- Today
- The former working network does not operate. Traces of old track in the forest are not trails, and we do not indicate their location.
The same track, a different task
Track for work, track for looking
The reservoirs at Topiło show that today’s view is sometimes the result of a technology: the ponds are not natural lakes. Below, the two tasks side by side, without a shared numerical axis — because the material contains no figures that could be honestly set against each other.
Until 1991 — timber haulage
- Task
- Haulage of timber from felling sites to processing plants, including sawmills (V1/V2).
- Layout
- Permanent lines and portable track moved to wherever felling was under way. The material gives no dates or locations for individual sections.
- Topiło
- From 1932/33 the reservoirs in the Perebel valley were used to submerge timber, that is, to preserve it by cutting off the supply of oxygen (S2).
- What we do not know
- The length of the whole former network, the number of depots and the quantity of timber hauled out. This is a gap, not zero.
Today — a ride through the forest
- Task
- A tourist ride on the Hajnówka–Topiło route, 11 km, run by the Hajnówka Forest District (S3).
- Layout
- One surviving route. The former working branches are not operating.
- Topiło
- The end of the route, by ponds of industrial origin: a landscape that arose from haulage technology.
- What we do not give
- Timetables, prices and current access restrictions. Date of last check: none — this page does not contain one.
A 2009 photograph showing the track on the viaduct in the Leśna Prawa valley is available on Wikimedia Commons (author and licence according to the V2 caption: Stormbringer76, CC BY 3.0 — to be confirmed on the file page) — link to the file. It is not embedded, so that the page works fully offline.
Practical information, separate from the history
What is allowed, what history does not entitle you to
- A former embankment or trace of track is not a trail. The fact that a railway once ran there gives no right of entry. Outside marked paths, nature protection rules and forest district announcements apply (according to V2 — to be checked in S3).
- View the forest from the ride. The Hajnówka–Topiło route is the only place this page describes as operating. Do not step onto the trackbed or the viaduct.
- Dates, prices, restrictions. They are not given here. Check them directly with the Hajnówka Forest District before you travel; this version contains no date of last check.
- Choosing “former sidings” does not point to a place. The material has no location for them, and the page does not suggest where to look for them.
How to read
Limits and what was removed from V2
- The diagram is not a map: the directions and lengths of the lines are conventional, and the dates of the former lines are unknown — do not read them as a simultaneous state.
- The statuses describe the material of the package (V2/V1), not a new search of the sources. This is not a certificate of historical facts.
- “Described without dates”, “absent from the material” (inferred from dates of origin) and “no data” are neither zero nor a point on the timeline; a comparison involving a gap ends in “no conclusion” or “with a caveat”, never in a firm change.
- The cargo-mass calculator (density A/B/C) was removed: it relied on assumptions that the material does not confirm, and it drew attention away from the main comparison.
- The quiz and the planner that saved to the browser were removed: the quiz was replaced by the “Visit” section; the page saves nothing.
- The “Forest habitats” node was dropped: it is not a station. Five cut-off points, three places and the former sidings were kept, the latter as a separate item with no location.
- The page does not show current timetables and does not grant permission to enter the terrain.
