A window on both sides of the track: choose a station and a direction of travel
This page shows that the same track gives onto two different shores: the Vistula Lagoon on one side, the land of the Elbląg Upland on the other. The window drawings need JavaScript. Without it, the full description of the four stations, the limits of the material and the sources are below, in the sections “Four stations in text”, “Limits” and “Sources”.
Station on the line diagram (spacing is conventional, chainage unknown)
Direction of travel in the diagram (this is not a timetable)
Frombork · travelling Elbląg → Braniewo: water on the left, land on the right. Per the model assumption (the Lagoon on the north-west side of the line; see Limits).
TRACKschematic section travelling into the window towards Braniewo
The central mullion is the track (a schematic section; the cross means travel into the window). Both panes share the same drawing frame, but with no scale and no measure. In the water pane, the hatched strip between the embankment and the water means there is no data on the distance from the track to the water, not zero; the pier and quay are drawn according to the description, not as touching the track. On a narrow screen the crop keeps the track side and cuts off the opposite side; the “Wider view” button stacks the panes one below the other. This is a drawing, not permission to enter the railway line: make your observations from public roads.

Point to check:
Present-day status notice of 10 October 2026
Source for this station:
The Tolkmicko–Frombork section: two points to check
According to the V2 description, the Elbląg Upland descends here towards the waters of the Lagoon, which is why this section shows the pair of shores best. Below are two public points named in the material. Neither was visited or verified for this page; access to each must be checked separately.
Tolkmicko · harbour basin, quay and pier
Relation to the track: in the interwar period, the place where passengers changed from train to ship for Krynica Morska (Frombork development plan). Distance of the point from the track: no data.
To check: the condition of the pier and access to it.
Frombork · Artillery Tower and Cathedral Hill
Relation to the track: the station was placed below the cathedral hill (V2 description). The photograph from the tower, taken in 2006, shows the town, the port and the Lagoon from the town, not from a railway carriage. Distance from the track: no data.
To check: admission and opening hours.
Notice on services · date this page was prepared: 10 October 2026
The attached sources contain no confirmation of current, regular passenger trains on line 254. Timetables, the condition of the track and access to the land were not checked. The absence of a train does not make a public trail, and this page does not define a route along the railway line.
Limits: what comes from sources and what is drawn
Source material
The dates 1897–1899, the name Haffuferbahn, the route through the Elbląg Upland and the Old Prussian Coastland, the change at Tolkmicko, the development of Frombork from 1899, the records of Braniewo station 1852–1940, and the 2006 photograph. Taken over from V2/V1; they were not reopened in V3.
V3 author’s model
The window drawings, the assignment of the left and right sides to water or land, the section of the track, the equal spacing of stations. These are diagrams, not a map, a measurement or a view from a carriage.
To check
The assumption that the Lagoon lies on the north-west side of the line along the whole section; distances from the track to the water; access to the points; condition of the track; services; page numbers in the PDF.
What was removed relative to V2
Field notebook, saving, printing and the localStorage key: removed without replacement. They turned a log of views into a catalogue; the page no longer saves anything in the browser.
Filter and checklist of four sites: replaced by a single “point to check” field for each station.
Four view orientations and three layers of description: water and land are now visible at once, the track is a mullion between them, and history and present-day status stand side by side instead of behind a switch.
Embedded photograph from Commons: now a link (author, year, licence), so that the page works offline.
Kept: the four stations and their facts, the separation of history from today’s status, the references to sources, and the warning that this is not a route along the tracks.

View date (land)
Diagram; no photograph. Description based on a 2022 source, concerning the line built in 1897–1899.
Track
The start of the line; departure towards the shore.
History
Built in 1897–1899, the Lagoon Railway linked Elbląg with Braniewo. The German name Haffuferbahn refers to the shore of the lagoon. A municipal document of Frombork describes the route through the Elbląg Upland and the Old Prussian Coastland.
Present-day status
A junction station in the railway network, but the sources provided contain no confirmation of a current passenger timetable on line 254.
Point to check
The foreground of the Upland and city roads: a view towards the hills from public roads; access to be checked before a visit.
The water side of the Lagoon: in the interwar period, the route of ships to Krynica Morska, onto which passengers changed from trains.
Contact with water
According to the description: a harbour basin, quay and pier by the station. Distance from the track to the water: no data (hatched strip in the drawing; the pier is drawn according to the description, not as touching the track).
Land side
The edge of the Upland above the town
Steep, wooded moraine slopes of the Elbląg Upland descending towards the harbour buildings and the former station (V2 description; gradients were not measured).
Contact with land
Slopes descending towards the harbour buildings; height and gradient: no data.
View date (water)
Diagram; no photograph. The description concerns the interwar period; source from 2022.
View date (land)
Diagram; no photograph. Description based on a 2022 source.
Track
According to the V2 description, the railway line ran in a narrow strip between the slope and the surface of the water. Width of the strip: no data.
History
In the interwar period, passengers could change here from trains to ships sailing to Krynica Morska. The Frombork development plan describes this role of Tolkmicko. The railway stop was part of a journey that crossed the shore.
Present-day status
The station complex and the harbour quay. The sources provided contain no confirmation of current, regular passenger traffic on line 254.
Point to check
The harbour basin, quay and pier; check access to the pier before arriving.
The direction of the Vistula Lagoon: a broad expanse of water and, in the drawing, the distant outline of the Vistula Spit. The only photograph in the material comes from the Artillery Tower, not from the track.
Contact with water
According to the description, the town’s port. Distance from the track to the water: no data (hatched strip in the drawing; the quay is drawn according to the description, not as touching the track).
Land side
Cathedral Hill and the town
The Cathedral Hill complex and the blocks where, after the railway opened in 1899, hotels, inns and guesthouses for summer visitors appeared. The station was placed below the hill (V2 description).
Contact with land
The station below the hill according to the V2 description; height of the hill and distance from the track: no data.
View date (water)
Diagram. Photograph from the tower, not shown in the window: 2006, author teedbar, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.5; not embedded, opens in a new tab.
View date (land)
Diagram; no photograph of the land side. Description based on a 2022 source, concerning the period from 1899.
Track
According to the V2 description, the track bypassed the cathedral hill and led towards the port and in the direction of Braniewo.
History
The municipal development plan links the revival of tourism in Frombork at the end of the 19th century, among other things, with the opening of the railway in 1899. Over time, hotels, inns and guesthouses appeared. The station can therefore be read as part of the history of leisure, alongside the port and the cathedral hill.
Present-day status
No confirmation of current regular passenger trains in the V1 sources. Observation of the town and the waters is carried out from the Artillery Tower or from public roads, after checking access to them.
Point to check
The Artillery Tower and Cathedral Hill; check admission and opening hours before setting out.
There is no description of the view from the window; the material gives only the direction of travel: trains of the Lagoon Railway set out from Braniewo station towards Frombork and Elbląg, and according to V2 this is the western direction, towards the shore of the Lagoon. The water side in the drawing follows from the model assumption.
Contact with water
Distance of the station and the track from the Lagoon: no data (hatched strip in the drawing).
Land side
The layout of the former Eastern Railway
The track layout of the former Eastern Railway, which linked Braniewo with Königsberg. The archive has preserved a plan from 1875 showing the station, the locomotive shed and the turntable; the terrain is the plain of the Old Prussian Coastland by the Pasłęka (V2).
Contact with land
An active railway junction; observation is carried out solely from the square in front of the station and from public streets.
View date (water)
Diagram; no photograph. Basis: the station’s archival records from 1852–1940.
View date (land)
Diagram; no photograph. The archival plan from 1875 is not reproduced in the drawing.
Track
A corridor bringing traffic from the Coastland into the station area (V2 description).
History
Braniewo was where the Lagoon Railway joined the Eastern Railway. The archive in Olsztyn presents materials on the station from 1852–1940, including a plan from 1875 showing the station, the locomotive shed and the turntable. This older junction makes it possible to see the lagoon route as part of an extensive network.
Present-day status
A junction of the national rail network, but the section of line 254 remains without regular passenger traffic confirmed in the sources. This is an active railway area.
Point to check
The square in front of the station: a view from a public square.
