V3 draft / A

Maniowy · Dunajec valley

The last day before the flooding

One village can have several endings. Each row is a different event that someone might call the last day. Choose a row — we will set it beside a second meaning and show whether it is the same event.

  1. Last for the family: leaving the home no date in the material no account or document; the editors do not give a day selected — on the left
  2. Last for the village as a place: relocation to the slopes of the Gorce Mountains 1970s–1980s municipality description carried over from V2; to be checked against the source selected — on the left
  3. Last for the valley: filling of the reservoir with water 1997 date carried over from V2; source of the date to be identified selected — on the left

Three meanings — full text

Leaving the home by the family

no date in the material

Editorial comment. This meaning is given by the topic brief. The material contains no account, consent or dated document, so the editors give no day and do not describe what it looked like. The earlier “models” from V2 (a cart with belongings, c. 1982) had an assumed date without a source and were removed.

Authorised statement: none. A quotation requires the person’s consent, including for a public comparison with another account.

Limit: without an account it is not known whether there was a common day for all families.

Source: none.

Relocation of the village to the slopes of the Gorce Mountains

1970s–1980s

Editorial comment. The Czorsztyn municipality describes the relocation of Maniowy to the slopes of the Gorce Mountains; the range of years comes from the V2 description and needs checking against the source. According to this description, the wooden chapel of St Sebastian (an object from 1772) was moved to the new cemetery. 1772 is the age of the object, not the day of the move — the material gives no date for it.

Authorised statement: none. A quotation requires the person’s consent, including for a public comparison with another account.

Limit: it does not indicate the day any family left.

Source to be checked: Maniowy — Czorsztyn municipality

Filling of the reservoir with water

1997

Editorial comment. V2 gives the year 1997 for the reservoir (Lake Czorsztyn). This is the date of water in the valley, not the day homes were left. V2 gives no source for this date — it must be added before the date is regarded as verified.

Authorised statement: none. A quotation requires the person’s consent, including for a public comparison with another account.

Limit: it speaks of the surface of the lake, not of the end of the village’s community life.

Source: to be identified (it is not in the V2 material).

Three dates of one testimony

When an authorised account appears in the Atlas, each will have three separate dates. They must not be merged into one.

Date of the event
When something happened: departure, relocation, filling of the reservoir.
Date of recording
When someone told or wrote about it. This is the date of the recollection, not of the event.
Date of publication
When the statement was shown publicly. Consent to a quotation need not cover setting it beside someone else’s memory.

Today the material contains no account, so none of these three dates is known for any testimony. The event dates above are dates from institutional descriptions, not of anyone’s memory.

A document will appear when it helps with dating

It is not there now. According to V2, the documentation unit in the “Szukaj w Archiwach” [Search the Archives] resource was unavailable during the source search. The page does not insert a decorative scan or invented photographs from before the flooding.

Dating document — nonerequires identification of the unit and publication rights
Dated photograph no. 1 — nonerequires the author, date taken and rights
Dated photograph no. 2 — nonerequires the author, date taken and rights

The album “Maniowy 1974–2014” and the film Zapora [The Dam] are an anniversary summary; the years 1974–2014 are the frame of the documentation, not the day of the end. The album of Maniowy’s objects is a separate topic in the catalogue (according to the pilot note: project 053, to be checked) — we do not repeat it here.

What was removed from V2

V2 is a working version with a pending correction; this draft does not assume its content is correct.

Sources for further verification

Carried over from V2 as pointers. None of them was opened in this pass.

  1. Maniowy — Czorsztyn municipality: description of the relocation of the village and of the chapel of St Sebastian (per V2).
  2. Album Maniowy 1974–2014 — the municipality’s archive site: exhibition, residents’ meeting, film Zapora [The Dam] (per V2).
  3. Photograph of Lake Czorsztyn (2015), Wikimedia Commons: V2 gives the author Grzegorz W. Tężycki and CC BY-SA 4.0; not used here.
  4. “Szukaj w Archiwach” [Search the Archives]: the material gives no address of a specific unit.
