Inland dunes

From the trail you see almost the same thing: forest. Three schematic columns show how far below it the water is – at three places on one dune.

Diagram of column 1, crest: surface 10 model units above the water table. A dry sand layer 10 units thick, with water below.

1 · Crest: water 10 u. below the surface

Diagram of column 2, lee slope: surface 5 model units above the water table. A dry sand layer 5 units thick, with water below.

2 · Lee slope: water 5 u. below the surface

Diagram of column 3, hollow behind the dune: surface 1 model unit above the water table. A thin layer of dry sand, with water just beneath it.

3 · Hollow: water 1 u. below the surface

Where the three columns lie on a cross-section of the dune Author’s schematic. Cross-section from west (left) to east (right): a gentle slope, the crest at point 1, a steep slope at point 2, a flat hollow at point 3. Beneath it all, a dashed blue line for the assumed water table. 1 2 3 west east

Position of the columns on the dune (a diagram, not a map). 1 u. is one model unit, not a metre. We assume a single water level beneath all three – in the field the water table need not be level.

Three places

Three things to look for from the trail at each place

The columns are points on a diagram. We do not claim which stop on the path each one corresponds to. ‘I don’t know’ is a perfectly valid answer.

Photo of point 1: noneWe have no photograph of our own from this place, nor rights to anyone else’s. A photo taken from the trail is meant to go here.

1 · Crest

surface +10 u. above the water · dry for 10 u. downwards (model)

  1. Does the path rise, fall or run flat?
  2. Beside the path, do you see pale, loose sand or leaf litter on sand – rather than water?
  3. Do the trees look similar here to those lower down, where the path descends?

In the model: the thickest dry layer above the water table.

Photo of point 2: noneWe have no photograph of our own from this place, nor rights to anyone else’s. A photo taken from the trail is meant to go here.

2 · Lee slope

surface +5 u. above the water · dry for 5 u. downwards (model)

  1. Is the descent here clearly shorter or steeper than the climb on the other side?
  2. Does the colour or moisture of the ground change as you descend?
  3. Is the landform clear, or blurred by the forest? Write ‘don’t know’ if you cannot judge.

In the model: the water is half as far down as from the crest.

Photo of point 3: noneWe have no photograph of our own from this place, nor rights to anyone else’s. A photo taken from the trail is meant to go here.

3 · Hollow behind the dune

surface +1 u. above the water · dry for only 1 u. downwards (model)

  1. Is the ground here flat or slightly sunken?
  2. From the path, do you see moisture or standing water? Do not leave the trail to approach it.
  3. Would the same place look the same at another time of year? Leave that as a question.

In the model: water just below the surface; this is how V2 describes the contrast, following KPN material (to be checked).

Rules for observing. Only from the marked trail. Do not step onto bare sand, do not dig, do not collect. Before you set out, check the park’s notices – this page does not say whether the trail is open or dry today.

What is model and what is source

The drawing is an assumption, not a measurement

Model

The heights of 10 / 5 / 1 u. and a single water level for all columns are choices made for the drawing. They are not metres, not a borehole and not the current state of the waters. The slider shows only how much dry layer lies above the assumed water.

Author’s assumption

Description from V2 materials

According to V2, citing the park’s materials: at the ‘Wydma’ (dune) stop on the ‘Do Starego Dębu’ trail, the park describes the neighbouring dune and bog; the sand was delivered by the ancient Vistula, and wind shaped the dunes at the end of the last glaciation.

What we do not know

The actual groundwater level at these places, the origin of particular slopes, or which point on the diagram corresponds to which stop. This requires sources and consultation.

Trail

The ‘Do Starego Dębu’ trail

3.7 km12 stops, according to V2 from a KPN brochure · not checked in this run

V2 gives the start as Dziekanów Leśny and says stop 10 is devoted to the dune, and at the same time cites a second brochure (‘Przez Wilczą Górę’) with a ‘Wydma’ board. We have not settled which board belongs to which trail.

Trail map: no material

We have no legally usable map extract or verified route geometry. We do not draw it from memory. To be supplied: a map with a clear licence or the park’s official plan.
